Moultrie M-880 Game Camera Review

Note to reader. Moultrie M-880 (2013 model) seems to be obsolete nowadays but most of the facts below apply to M-880 2014 model as well. We are hoping to update this blog with new trail camera reviews during this spring, including new Moultrie models.

One of the things I really like in today’s trail camera scene is the amount of competition. There are so many manufacturers providing various models, especially in entry level and mid price range cameras that after the introduction the trail camera prices tend to go down rather quickly. This is naturally good for us, the customers.

This is exactly what has happened to Moultrie M-880. Upon introduction in the early 2013 it was one of the top models of Moultrie’s product line (and it still is), and it was priced roughly at $180. Now the price has come down substantially, and you can find Moultrie M-880 for sale at approx. $130.

The predecessor of Moultrie M-880 was Moultrie M-80XT, which was among the top game cameras in its price range and also one of the best selling Moultrie models overall. In a nutshell, Moultrie M-880 makes everything better than M-80XT. It has faster trigger speed, faster recovery time, outstanding night range and it shoots HD video with sound.

M-880 is equipped with 8MP image sensor and 30 LEDs Low Glow IR flash. You can view both images and videos on a 16:9 widescreen.

Both night and day picture quality is outstanding. Day pictures are colorful, and contrast, color as well as lightning are well in balance. Due to powerful IR flash, the night time shots are bright from left to right with plenty of depth.

Picture delay option in M-880 allows you to set delay from 5 seconds to 60 minutes. The FastFire mode takes 1-4 pictures per second, and Multi-shot 1-3 pictures in row.

Moultrie M-880 supports SD memory cards up to 32GB. The manufacturer states that the camera can capture up to 9,500+ images on one set of 8 AA batteries.

Pros

M-880 is one of the smallest trail cameras on the market today. The case of the camera is well designed.  As an example, the entire battery case slides out of the camera, so you don’t need to remove the camera from the tree in order to replace the batteries. Moultrie has also included two ¼” x 20 threaded inserts instead of typical one, allowing you to use variation of tripods and/or tree mounts with the camera.

The use of M-880 is really easy. The controls are user friendly and programming is made intuitive. Even if you are a total newbie with trail cameras, you should not need to glance at the manual.

The powerful flash makes M-880 one of the best night game cameras there is. The flash coverage is really good from left to right and the range is phenomenal.

The detection circuit makes M-880 a great camera for hunting. Moultrie states that the camera can detect 100% of the movement within 40ft. In reality the camera can detect almost everything even up to 60ft. The detection zone is at least as wide as the field of view of the camera itself. Combined with trigger speed of less than 1 second, and fast recovery time, it is guaranteed that you will catch even the fastest moving animals.

Picture and video quality can only be described with one word: outstanding.

The fact that Moultrie M-880 runs on 8 AA batteries is naturally a good thing as it allows you to use rechargeable batteries and save some money in the long run.

Cons

Even though the IR flash uses low glow LEDs, the flash itself is actually quite visible. Now this is not an issue for most of the customers, merely something to be aware of. If you need a trail camera with totally invisible flash, you should check our reviews Browning Spec Ops or Wildview TK40.

The instruction manual of  M-880 is not the most thorough one. On the other hand the camera is relatively easy to operate, so in most cases you won’t be needing the manual at all.

Conclusion

The fact is that Moultrie is nowadays one of the best game camera brands. They have plenty of models to choose from and they all are durable models. Moultrie M-880 is perhaps the best Moultrie model (and best trail camera in general) what comes to overall value. It is really difficult to find as good camera at this price.

So if you are not on a shoestring budget and you want a camera with plenty of features, excellent picture quality and high value in general, buy Moultrie M880.
