Trail Camera Buying Guide – Picture Quality

Obviously you want to get good quality pictures with your camera. However, real life picture quality of the trail camera can be very difficult feature to confirm. Many trail cameras are marketed with high megapixels but this doesn’t necessarily guarantee good quality pictures. Many times low quality lenses used in trail cameras reduce the quality of the pictures.

Picture Quality

Typically sensor resolutions in cheap game cameras range between 4 and 8 megapixel. The pictures are usually saved in jpg format and many game cameras have option to set the image quality to “low”, “medium” or “high”. To get the best possible resolution it is recommended to always use “high” parameter setting.

Best way to determine picture quality of the camera is to look for sample pictures. You can easily find sample pictures from camera review sites like www.cheaptrailcameras.com, from manufacturers’ sites, from Amazon.com, from various forums etc. If the camera model is just released and you cannot find any sample pictures you can always contact the manufacturer and ask them to send you some samples. This is also a good way to measure the level of their customer service.
